Photo shows accused murderer Pistorius back in blades

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A South African newspaper published a grainy cellphone photograph of Oscar Pistorius at a running track in his carbon fiber blades Thursday as the Olympian's agent said his return to training was now imminent ? but denied he was already in training.

The Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper had the image of what it said was Pistorius, who was charged with murder for the Valentine's Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, on the front page of its Thursday edition.

In the photograph ? taken by a high school student from a bus passing by the track ? the double amputee is seen from some distance wearing his blades and dark lycra running clothes and is walking on a track with his hands on his hips.

The photo was taken on March 24 by teenager Lisa Smith, her field hockey coach said, when their team was visiting the University of Pretoria where Pistorius' regular practice facility is.

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Pistorius had been at the track in the South African capital city on the day of the photograph.

It was the first time Pistorius had put his blades on since he shot dead Steenkamp in his home in the early hours of Feb. 14, his agent, Peet van Zyl, told the AP later on Thursday.

Pistorius was only "having a jog around the track," the agent said, as the newspaper claimed sources had told it the Olympic 400-meter runner and Paralympic champion had begun full training at the university on March 21. Van Zyl disputed that and said neither he nor Ampie Louw, Pistorius' coach and the man who controls his training sessions, were present at the track on the day the photograph was taken.

Field hockey coach and school sports director Charmaine Koekemoer said she was driving the bus past the track at around 10.15 a.m. on the Sunday morning when members of her Hoerskool Voortrekker girls hockey team started shouting "There's Oscar, there's Oscar!" from the back.

Student Smith then took the photo on her BlackBerry, Koekemoer said. It shows Pistorius in the distance with the bars of a metal fence in the foreground. He is the only person in the shot.

"The kids were very excited," Koekemoer told the AP. "That was the excitement, seeing a world icon in real life. It was nothing to do with his case.

"We didn't see him running around the track. He was just walking to the 100 meter end line down the final stretch. It looked like he was going to take his blades off."

The single photo, a grainy image taken through the black fence and showing Pistorius walking on the far side of the track, was accompanied by a front-page story in Beeld under the headlines "Oscar is back on the track" and "In training with other athletes."

Pistorius' management team was expecting the photo to be published, Van Zyl said, after Pistorius had told them he had visited his track with some Australian athletes on the day a little under two weeks ago. Koekemoer ? who was visiting with her students from the eastern city of Pietermaritzburg ? said there were other athletes around Pistorius when they saw him.

Neither Pistorius' coach nor his agent knew about the track visit until afterward, Van Zyl said.

But while Pistorius wasn't yet in a training routine, the agent said, his return could be any day now. The image of the world's most famous disabled athlete back on his unmistakable running blades was likely now to become more and more common again.

"He might get up this morning and call (coach) Ampie (Louw) and say he wants to be at the track at one o'clock," Van Zyl said. Van Zyl also said Pistorius' desire to start training again did not show disrespect to the family of Steenkamp.

Pistorius denies murder in the Valentine's Day killing of model Steenkamp, saying he mistook her for a nighttime intruder in his home. His next scheduled court appearance is June 4, when prosecutors say they intend to serve indictments.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. and Turkish officials say Secretary of State John Kerry is traveling to Turkey and Israel this weekend to build on the two nations' efforts to repair ties.

Kerry had planned to depart next week for meetings in London and then South Korea, China and Japan.

But he has moved up his departure to Saturday to build on the rapprochement that President Barack Obama brokered between Turkey and Israel during his visit to the region two weeks ago, the officials said.

Kerry will also discuss regional concerns, including Syria and the Mideast peace process.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the trip, which has not been announced.

Wall Street down after weak data but S&P 500 still near record

By Angela Moon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks declined on Wednesday after disappointing economic data, but the S&P 500 index hung near an all-time intraday high.

Disappointment came from a jobs report that showed less-than-expected hiring in the private sector in March, while a services sector index also came in below expectations.

Investors expect market movements to be slight before Friday's release of the broader U.S. non-farm payrolls report for March from the Labor Department.

Momentum for the market to move higher remains, strategists say. The S&P has been near an intraday record level of 1,576.09 for the past several sessions, inching to within three points on Tuesday before pulling back. The index still ended at a new closing high on Tuesday.

"Investors now appear to be focused on the potential for continuing global economic growth in the year ahead," said Stuart T. Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors. The firm raised its year-end S&P 500 target range to 1,575-1,625 from an initial target of 1,525-1,575.

The S&P 500 has advanced more than 10 percent this year and last week broke above its 2007 closing high. The Dow broke above its 2007 record on March 5.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 70.27 points, or 0.48 percent, at 14,591.74. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 12.32 points, or 0.78 percent, at 1,557.93. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 25.76 points, or 0.79 percent, at 3,229.11.

In economic news, the ADP National Employment Report showed U.S. companies hired at the slowest pace in five months, far below what economists had expected, though the February report was revised upward.

"One potential cloud on the horizon is that no construction jobs were created in March. We think this is a little unusual, especially given the time of year ahead of the onset of the key spring selling season," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co in New York.

"The lack of employment gains begs the question as to whether construction gains are purely related to rebuilding in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy. We doubt it, but it now has one thinking about that notion in advance of the non-farm payroll reading."

The Institute for Supply Management's March services sector index also came in below expectations, with the pace of growth at the lowest level in seven months.

Among stocks on the move, Zynga Inc surged nearly 15 percent to $3.52 after the company said it would begin offering poker and casino-style games in Britain in partnership with Bwin.party Digital Entertainment .

ConAgra Foods Inc fell 0.8 percent to $35.23 after reporting third-quarter earnings that fell 57 percent, though revenue grew.

Monsanto Co rose 1.3 percent to $104.94 after raising its full-year profit forecast.

Issues in the euro zone will continue to be in focus a day after Cyprus concluded a bailout deal. The plan, which still requires ratification, would mean the country receives a 10 billion euro loan and that it has until 2018 to carry out measures to shore up its finances. The country's finance minister resigned after concluding the deal.

While investors have largely used any market decline as a buying opportunity, the situation in Cyprus has been a major source of market uncertainty in recent weeks.

Arthur Frommer takes brand back from Google, will keep guidebooks going

Arthur Frommer reportedly takes back brand from Google, will keep guidebooks going

The tale of Google and Frommer's famed travel guides has taken another twist this evening. Associated Press writer Beth Harpaz reports Arthur Frommer confirmed over the phone that he has retaken control of the brand from Google, and plans to continue publishing them in ebook and print formats, as well as maintaining the Frommers.com website. This comes after Google acquired the brand from publisher Wiley in 2012, followed by Skift.com's revelation last month that it apparently intended to shut production of the books down.

We're told by a Google spokesperson (check after the break for the full statement) that it has integrated the content it acquired from Frommer's and Wiley into its products including Google+ Local, that it has transferred ownership back to the founder and that it will continue licensing content from him. Why things took this circuitous route right back to the man who started it all back in 1957 is unknown and terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but we're sure fans of the budget travel how-tos are happy to see Frommer's keep going.
